Description
Doublestruck is a trusted provider of digital assessment tools—Exampro and Testbase—supporting thousands of teachers and students in primary and secondary schools across the UK. As a wholly owned subsidiary of AQA, it has operated with agility and autonomy and is now entering a new phase of strategic alignment and growth. With the founder retiring after 30 years, we’re seeking a new General Manager to guide Doublestruck into its next chapter. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of a respected edtech business and contribute meaningfully to AQA’s wider digital assessment strategy.
You’ll lead the closer alignment of Doublestruck with AQA’s General Qualifications and Assessment Services businesses, develop a clear commercial strategy, product and technology roadmaps, and support sustainable growth while maintaining the entrepreneurial spirit and agility of a smaller business within a larger group. You’ll help expand reach across AQA centres, scale Testbase as a key revenue stream, and collaborate with a capable leadership team. You’ll also represent Doublestruck on a new management board, contribute to governance, and help shape AQA’s digital assessment strategy. There’s potential for broader leadership roles within AQA as the business evolves.
We’re looking for someone who has guided a founder-led or mission-driven organisation through growth and maturity. You’ll bring commercial insight, experience in product development and scaling, and a history of achieving impactful outcomes. Doublestruck is built on the ethos of understanding ‘what the teacher needs and how to make it easy for the teacher,’ with solutions rooted in classroom practice—so a strong affinity for education is important. Classroom experience is welcome but not essential, and experience in edtech would be an advantage. You’ll be strategic, willing to engage directly to support operational excellence, and bring a forward-thinking approach to shaping the future of assessment and learning.
You’ll lead with empathy, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to inclusive leadership that reflects the values of both Doublestruck and AQA. You’ll guide teams through change with clarity and care, and support diversity at senior levels. We value leaders who support others to innovate and thrive, and who create environments where people feel they belong.
Salary: Competitive executive-level package with performance-related bonus. Benefits include 25 days’ holiday, private medical insurance, a 5% employer pension contribution, and death in service benefit. The role is based in London or Guildford, with hybrid working (typically two days in the office).
At AQA and Doublestruck, we’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. We actively encourage applications from all suitably qualified individuals, regardless of background, identity, or lived experience. If you meet most of the criteria and are excited about the role, we’d love to hear from you.

Having only ever had one leader in its 30 years, Doublestruck is evolving from a founder-led business into its next chapter of growth and maturity. As we move into this exciting new phase, we’d love to hear about your experience leading a team through change and uncertainty. What did you do to keep people motivated, working well together, and adapting to new ways of working? - Understanding the Classroom
Drawing on your own experience, what do you believe teachers and students need most from digital assessment tools and resources as they prepare for their summative exams? How would you use that understanding to help shape Doublestruck’s products and plans? - Driving Commercial Growth
This role involves growing Doublestruck’s income and expanding its reach across AQA and into international markets. Tell us about a time when you developed a strategy to grow a product, service, or business. What was your approach, and what impact did it have? - Corporate Agility
Doublestruck is part of a larger organisation but works in a fast-moving, creative way. Can you share an example of when you’ve worked in a setting that required both structure and flexibility? How did you help balance innovation with the need to align with wider organisational goals?
